On Monday, May 1, Victoria ISD hosted the Staff Excellence Awards where the staff was recognized for their achievements in the following categories: Campus Teacher of the Year, Campus Impact Award, and Campus Rising Star Award.
The VISD Impact Award recognizes a support staff member that goes above and beyond to serve students and support staff. This team member plays a large role on campus and truly impacts everyone around them.
The VISD Rising Star represents teachers who have three or fewer years of teaching experience and demonstrates exceptional drive and commitment to the profession. These outstanding individuals have been recognized by their peers and campus administrators as rising stars on campus.
Melisa Crable was selected as the Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Lindsay Ferrell was selected as the Secondary Teacher of the Year.
Melisa Crable, a 5th-grade teacher at O’Connor ACE Elementary School, is in her 10th year of teaching, and her 8th year of teaching with VISD. Prior to coming to O’Connor, Crable taught at DeLeon Elementary.
If you were to visit this Mrs. Crable’s classroom, you would likely find students using technology to integrate multiple content areas and apply new learning in real-world situations. After school, you might find her Computer Club students working on the campus yearbook, creating and editing videos, or applying skills they learned during visits to local news agencies. Deliberately connecting her students to the community brings learning to life in Melisa Crable‘s fifth-grade classroom.
Lindsay Ferrell, a Social Studies teacher at Howell Middle School, is in her 7th year of teaching and her 2nd year with VISD, starting with Howell in 2021.
If you were to walk into our Secondary Teacher of the Year’s classroom, you will find students completing project-based learning experiences with a focus on mastering the grade level standards while also building creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking skills. Her students engage in respectful dialogue to solve problems collectively and have opportunities to experience the democratic process in action in her Social Studies classroom.
Crable and Ferrell will move to the regional selection process for the Region 3 Teacher of the Year, conducted in June and July. Crable and Ferrell are both candidates for their respective grade levels.
