VISD Child Nutrition Department Participates in Texas Agriculture’s Farm Fresh Challenge

The Victoria ISD Child Nutrition Department is proud to announce its participation in the Texas Department of Agriculture’s 2023 Farm Fresh Challenge. Welcomed by Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, VISD joins schools across the state in promoting Texas-grown foods and supporting local farmers and ranchers through this initiative.

Throughout October, the VISD nutrition team will enhance their menus with local products while providing students with opportunities to learn about agriculture in Texas. This effort is part of Commissioner Miller’s Texas Farm Fresh Initiative, designed to encourage schools and care centers to incorporate Texas products into their meals and snacks.

"The Farm Fresh Challenge promotes Texas agriculture in schools and child and adult day care centers across the great state of Texas,” said Commissioner Miller. “Everything needed for any meal or snack grows in Texas thanks to our hardworking farmers and ranchers. I encourage our partners to continue serving Texas products throughout the year, even after the Farm Fresh Challenge ends."

By sourcing locally, VISD not only keeps its purchasing power within the state but also strengthens ties with local farmers, fostering a greater appreciation for Texas agriculture. The Farm Fresh Challenge aims to raise community awareness about the benefits of buying local foods, contributing to both the local economy and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.

“The Farm Fresh Challenge is a wonderful opportunity for VISD to support local Texan farmers and provide our students with nutritious meals,” said Randall ‘Randy’ Meyer, Interim Superintendent of Schools. “By sourcing locally, we not only contribute to the local economy but also educate our students about the importance of local agriculture. It's a win-win situation that promotes healthy eating habits and community involvement.”

Throughout the month of October, all 22 schools within VISD will offer a variety of Texas-grown fruits and vegetables. The district aims to increase awareness of unique Texas produce and educate students on how these foods are grown. Introducing children to a wider variety of local fruits and vegetables will encourage healthier eating habits and foster a lifelong appreciation for local agriculture.
