Victoria ISD Recognizes October as Fentanyl Awareness Month

October is officially recognized as Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Month, following the passage of House Bill 3144 by the 88th Texas Legislature. This month aims to increase awareness of the dangers posed by fentanyl, a synthetic opioid linked to an alarming rise in overdose deaths. In response to the growing concern over fentanyl-related overdoses, Victoria ISD is stepping up its efforts to educate students, staff, and families on the risks and prevention of fentanyl poisoning.

House Bill 3908, also known as Tucker’s Law, further emphasizes the importance of fentanyl awareness in schools. This law requires Texas public schools to observe a dedicated Fentanyl Poisoning Awareness Week in October. During this week, students will receive age-appropriate, research-based instruction on the prevention of fentanyl abuse and addiction, the risks of fentanyl poisoning, and overdose prevention.

In alignment with the new state legislation, Victoria ISD is committed to providing comprehensive education on the dangers of fentanyl and other synthetic opioids. Victoria ISD also works with local community organizations, health agencies, and mental health professionals to offer specialized support and resources. These partnerships will enhance the district's ability to deliver targeted and impactful health education to students, empowering them to make informed decisions.

During this month, and throughout the year, Victoria ISD encourages families to engage in open conversations about the risks of drug use and the importance of understanding the dangers of fentanyl. Together, through education and community involvement, we can work to prevent fentanyl-related tragedies and promote a safer future for all.
