This January, the Victoria Independent School District is thrilled to shine a spotlight on the remarkable individuals who serve on our school board during School Board Recognition Month. With this year’s theme, “Leadership for Tomorrow’s Texas,” we celebrate the dedication, passion, and vision of our trustees who work tirelessly to ensure every student has the opportunity to succeed.
Our school board members are more than policymakers—they’re champions for our students, advocates for our schools, and trusted voices for our community. Elected by you, they take on the vital task of building bridges between classrooms and the larger community, setting goals, and driving progress to create a brighter future for all of us.
Over the past year, our trustees have prioritized the development of Employee Compensation Plan Version One to retain high-quality staff; approved the lowest tax rate in 30 years in August 2023; overseen the construction of the new Mission Valley Elementary School, ensuring the project remains on time and on budget; taken time to personally recognize high-performing students at the annual Board Excellence Awards; conducted a comprehensive superintendent search and successfully appointed Superintendent of Schools, Sheila Collazo; toured multiple facilities and actively supported the continued implementation of a master facilities plan; participated in board training sessions with a focus on student instruction and outcomes; supported campus initiatives to increase student attendance; and backed efforts to reduce student disciplinary infractions across campuses.
In their roles, our school board trustees wear many hats, including:
Setting goals and priorities that shape the vision for our schools.
Crafting and reviewing policies to foster success and accountability.
Hiring and evaluating our Superintendent.
Adopting a budget that supports our students while being stewards of public funds.
Listening to and communicating with our community to ensure every voice is heard.
Their service is a labor of love, requiring time, thoughtful decisions, and a steadfast commitment to our students and staff. With staggered three- or four-year terms, their dedication provides consistency and strength, laying the foundation for long-term success in our district.
We encourage you to join us in saying “thank you” to these extraordinary individuals for the countless hours they devote to ensuring that student outcomes prevail. Whether attending board meetings, advocating for resources, or celebrating student achievements, their work touches every corner of our district—and every student’s future.
