VISD Celebrates CTE Month with Spotlight on Student Success at Welding Competition

In honor of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, Victoria Independent School District proudly highlights the achievements of its talented students who participated in the prestigious Welding Cup Competition hosted by Formosa Plastics Corporation on December 11, 2024.

Ten students from East and West High Schools' CTE programs showcased their welding expertise during this rigorous competition. The event featured two demanding challenges: the vertical open root groove weld and the vertical fillet (T-joint) weld. Students were tested on their technical skills, precision, and ability to work under timed conditions in a real-world industrial environment.

Among the standout performers, East High School senior Gage Kimball achieved a remarkable third place in the Fillet Weld Competition. Gage’s achievement earned him a trophy and a set of welding tools, providing a valuable boost to his budding career in welding.

“The Welding Cup Competition is an incredible opportunity for our students to gain hands-on experience and explore potential career paths in welding,” said Andrea Pope, CTI Principal and Career Readiness Specialist. “We are so proud of Gage and all of our participants for their dedication and hard work.”

Beyond the competition, students had the opportunity to explore Formosa Plastics Corporation's welding program and learn about exciting job opportunities in the field. Experiences like these underscore the vital role CTE programs play in preparing students for successful careers in high-demand industries.

Victoria ISD remains committed to equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in today’s workforce. As part of CTE Month, VISD celebrates the accomplishments of its students and educators who are shaping the future of our community through innovative learning opportunities.
